The Belarusian government has asked the European Union to give financial assistance to it, Belarusian Finance Minister Andrei Kharkovets told journalists on Wednesday.

"Now we have sent the request and are awaiting a reply. I think results of the preliminary consideration of our request and the first reaction will be available in the next ten days," Kharkovets said.

The EU has macroeconomic financing mechanisms, he said. "The issue is about discussing the sum at the level of two thirds of the lacking financing," the minister said.

The Belarusian side is not discussing the provision of a $500 million loan to Belarus, the minister said. "We are not discussing this issue. Let's wait for a reaction from the IMF [International Monetary Fund], which will confirm that our policy is correct. This is what we can come to talks with our Russian colleagues," he said.

The Russian side stated earlier that it "would like to wait for the IMF mission's review," Kharkovets said.
