Lukashenko against Belarus becoming part of Russia

Interfax-Ukraine

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he believes Belarus' entry into Russia would have dramatic consequences.

"The people in Belarus are not stupid, they think the same way as Russians: 'it's our land, we will not give it to anyone.' They are exactly like Russians. Do you want another Chechnya here? I don't," Lukashenko said in an interview with the Russian media published in the Belarusian press on Friday.

"We, as decision-makers, should calculate the possible implications. Suppose I even make such a decision, what's next? Are there not enough conflicts in the Caucasus?" Lukashenko said.

"On the other hand, there are scoundrels in Belarus, there are not many of them, two or three percent, but they are the most active and ambitious scoundrels in any society. They are ready to wage a national liberation war. They need a pretext. Everyone is laughing at it now. Do you think they have no weapons to fight with? They will get weapons from Ukraine and the Baltic states tomorrow. Their main channels are there and in Poland," Lukashenko said.

"Weapons and explosions will appear instantly, they will destabilize the situation and many people will think they are fighting for independence and sacred things," the Belarusian president said.
