Belarusian Government Provides US$1 Million for Earthquake-Hit Areas of Yushu

On June 1, 2010, Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping, at request, met with Anatoliy Tozik, Ambassador of Belarus to China. Tozik said that the embassy of Belarus in China has remitted the US$1 million donated by the Belarusian government to Yushu's earthquake-hit areas to the account designated by the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs according to the instruction of President Alexander Lukashenko. Cheng, on behalf of the Chinese government, thanked the Belarusian side for its generous assistance and said that the 25 tons of humanitarian relief materials provided by Belarus after the 2008 Sichuan Wenchuan earthquake effectively helped the relief efforts. After Yushu earthquake, President Lukashenko immediately sent two condolence messages to President Hu Jintao and made the political decision of providing the disaster-hit areas with US$1 million of humanitarian assistance, which once again demonstrates the high level of China-Belarus relations and the sincere friendship of sharing weal and woe between the two peoples.

Tozik noted that the Belarusian and the Chinese people always understand and support each other and it is a unique characteristic of bilateral relations. Since the establishment of China-Belarus diplomatic ties 18 years ago, China has provided Belarus with a large amount of assistance to support Belarus' economic and social development. He expressed hope that the assistance can contribute to the rebuilding of Yushu's disaster-hit areas.
