Syrian president Assad, Belarus FM discuss bilateral relationship

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday discussed with the visiting Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov bilateral relations, the official SANA news agency reported.

During their meeting, the two sides voiced mutual desire to open new prospects of cooperation in industry, trade and education.

Martynov conveyed an invitation from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to Assad, hoping the Syrian leader could visit Belarus as soon as possible, the report said.

The two sides also discussed regional issues. Assad stressed that the ongoing hostile policy of the Israeli government makes peace process in the region out of reach.

Martynov appreciated Syria's positive role in promoting security and stability in the region, calling for continuing consultation and coordination between Minsk and Damascus on issues of mutual concern, SANA reported.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko visited Syria in 2003 and 2005 and held talks with President Assad on regional and international issues as well as bilateral cooperation between Syria and Belarus in all fields.
