Belarusian Energy Ministry Comes Up With Power Grid Upgrade Programme

Minsk, 25 July: The Belarusian Energy Ministry has devised a five- year programme to modernize the nation's antiquated power grid, introduce energy-saving technologies and raise the share of domestic resources in the country's energy portfolio.

The 2006-10 programme has been drawn up in pursuance of [President] Alyaksandr Lukashenka's directive, Liliya Dulinets of the Energy Ministry told Belapan.

The programme provides for the upgrade of power plants with a total capacity of 1,248 MW.

The plan is expected to reduce the level of equipment wear and tear from 61.4 to 40.1 per cent.

Under the programme, 11 new power plants using domestic types of fuel are to appear in the country in the period.

"Particular attention is devoted to the modernization of the heating system, as it is the quality of central heating that determines to a great extent the level of comfort provided to households," the official noted, adding that the ministry plans to replace pipelines totalling 190-200 kilometres in length annually.

Power suppliers and plants are to bear the brunt of financing the modernization projects, while public funding will be offered to government-financed organizations and companies that pursue efficient energy-saving projects.
