Belarus to ban US, Canadian overflights

Minsk, 19:18

Belarus has decided to close its airspace for flights of American and Canadian airliners.

Belarussian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Popov gave no additional details over the exact date of flight ban.

He added that the move was suggested by President Alexander Lukashenko on Tuesday, during his televised address to the nation. This is a response to recent diplomatic rift, when a plane carrying Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky en-route to Cuba, was not allowed to fly over American and Canadian territory.

Belarus Foreign Ministry representative said the country was preparing a legal challenge to international courts to contest the visa sanctions. EU, US and Canada have imposed travel restrictions to 36 high-level dignitaries in Belarus following the disputed presidential election in March this year.
