'No Political Prisoners'

MINSK -- Belarus, criticized in the West for the jailing of an opposition activist last week, rejected any suggestion Friday that its jails held political prisoners.

A Foreign Ministry statement denounced the U.S. State Department's annual human rights report, which was released in March and was heavily critical of President Alexander Lukashenko's administration.

It said Washington, criticized in its turn over its treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay and at Abu Ghraib in Iraq, had no right to pass judgment on Belarus. (Reuters)
