Belarus marking Independence Day with sports festival

MINSK, July 2 (Itar-Tass) -- A sports festival dedicated to the Belarussian Independence Day, is underway in Minsk.

A key thoroughfare of the city was turned into a racing track, and President Alexander Lukashenko took part in the 4x2.5 kilometer roller ski relay race, which involved ten teams of governmental officials, servicemen and athletes. The president, who actively advertises healthy living, confirmed his perfect physical fitness, and his team won the race. The team led by Interior Minister Vladimir Naumov was the first runner-up.

Beach volley, street soccer, wrestling and bicycle races are in progress on the Pobeditelei Avenue. A kayak and sailer tournament is taking place on the Svisloch River.

Similar sports festivals are being held throughout the republic.
