Belarus opposition leader sentenced

Former university rector, Alexander Kozulin, 51, received a 5 ? year jail sentence Thursday for hooliganism and incitement to mass disorder.

Kozulin was arrested 6 days after the March 19 election after urging a protest march on a prison where many top opposition figures were being held.

Kozulin, who was protesting against what he called a rigged election, denounced the court verdict as "unfair", calling the judge "a hangman". He claimed he was being imprisoned to exclude him from future elections.

The sentence comes ahead of the weekend summit of leaders of the Group of Eight leading industrialised countries in St. Petersburg.

The Russian President Vladimir Putin is one of the few world leaders to support Lukashenko, widely criticized in the West for his dictatorial rule of 13 years.

Western nations have called for Kozulin's release, criticizing the undemocratic vote, and have imposed travel and financial sanctions on Belarusian officials.
