Belarus to ship 100 urban buses to Cuba by late 2007

Before the year is out, Belarus will ship 100 urban buses to Cuba, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Cuba Igor Poluyan told BelTA.

In his words, the sides have been discussing the project since April 2006, when Belarus Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky visited Cuba. The project is getting final adjustments. First of all, the project aims to renew the bus fleet of Havana. The diplomat expressed confidence thanks to the optimal price-quality combination Belarusian buses will enjoy good demand in Cuba.

Igor Poluyan stressed, Cuba shows significant interest in sophisticated Belarusian products such as tractors, trucks for various applications and spare parts. In 2006 Belarus shipped almost 200 MTZ tractors to Cuba. The signed contracts are expected to at least double the figure this year, said the Ambassador.

Igor Poluyan reminded, back in the Soviet times Cuba used to buy a lot of tractors produced by Minsk Tractor Works. "They earned a good reputation in Cuban conditions. The country still uses around 7,000 tractors supplied back in the Soviet times," noted the diplomat. He added, Cuba is seriously interested in setting up joint companies with Belarus to produce tractors and trailers.

The Ambassador said, tractors had used to be supplied to Cuba via third countries. Direct supplies have been established in the last several years.
