Germany's Stange appointed Belarus coach

Bernd Stange, a former East Germany and Iraq coach, has been appointed national team coach for Belarus, the nation's football federation said on Monday.

Stange, 59, takes the place of Yuri Puntus, who resigned recently after poor results in the qualifying campaign for Euro 2008. Belarus lie fifth in their qualifying group with all but no chance of making the Euro finals in Switzerland and Austria.

The German Stange coached East Germany 1983-1988 and gained fame as Iraq coach 2002-2004. Appointed when Saddam Hussein still ruled the country, Stange led the team to the 2004 Olympics, but resigned before the Olympic tournament for security reasons.

Stange has also coached in Ukraine, Oman and Cyprus in the past. dpa
