Iran, Belarus expand defense ties

Iran and Belarus have set to boost defense ties after talks between the visiting Iranian Defense Minister and Belarusian officials in Minsk.

During his visit to Belarus, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Mostafa Mohammad- Najjar held talks with high-ranking Belarusian officials on prospects of defense cooperation.

Mohammad-Najjar's visit is aimed at inspecting the defense capabilities of the Belarusian army and its readiness.

The Iranian defense minister and his entourage arrived in Minsk on Wednesday and will stay there until Saturday.

The Iranian official has attended a war game run by the Belarusian army, Belarusian media reported.

The time and schedule of the meeting between the two countries' defense ministers was discussed by Presidents Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko, during a meeting two months ago.

Ties between Iran and Belarus have been expanding in recent months. Belarus was one of the countries which backed Iran's nuclear program and opposed sending its dossier to the UN Security Council in the meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors.
