Belarus to unveil second monument to John Paul II

MINSK. July 8 (Interfax) - A monument to Pope John Paul II is planned to be unveiled in Volozhin, the Minsk region, on July 12.

"A monument to John Paul II will be installed in Volozhin downtown, near the St. Josef cathedral on July 12," priest Alexander Amelchenya responsible relations with media at the secretariat of Catholic Bishops of Belarus told Interfax.

"The monument is over 2.5 meters tall; it is the statue of the pope who blesses people," the priest said.

Apostolic Nuncio to Belarus Archbishop Martin Vidovic and Apostolic Administrator of the Minsk and Mogilyov diocese bishop Antony Demyanko will take part in the opening ceremony, Amelchenya said.

This will be the second monument to John Paul II in Belarus. The first monument was erected near the St. Anna cathedral in the village of Mosar, the Glubokoye district of the Vitebsk region.
