Belarus Begins Allocating Frequencies for 3G Networks

Text of report in English by Belarusian privately-owned news agency Belapan

Minsk, 2 July: Both existing and new mobile operators can be granted a license to build 3G networks in Belarus, Henadz Tsaryk, a departmental chief at the communications ministry, told reporters in Minsk on Wednesday [2 July].

Bids for such licenses may be accepted from both groups of applicants, according to the official. "If there are such contenders that can create a network within an appropriate period, no problem," he said.

Tsaryk noted that the launch of 3G networks in Belarus would depend on the pace of the allocation of frequencies.

The communications ministry is expected to consider bids for third-generation (3G) network licenses before 1 December 2008.

Belarus' two leading GSM operators, Velcom and MTS, have already announced plans to bid for a 3G license.

Third-generation mobile telephony offers users new services such as video telephony, faster Internet access and networked games.
