Belarusian Liberal-Democrats won't run in parliamentary elections, focuson presidential bid

MINSK. July 24 (Interfax) - The Belarusian Liberal-Democratic Party (LDP) has decided not to run in parliamentary elections in the fall and instead will focus on promoting its leader Sergei Gaidukevich as its candidate in the future presidential elections.

"Based on a resolution by the 11th congress of the Liberal- Democratic Party, whose participants unanimously decided to nominate Sergei Gaidukevich as a presidential candidate in the next presidential elections, the party regards the implementation of this decision as its top priority in the coming period," the Liberal-Democratic Party said in a statement on Thursday.

"The LDP will not take part in the elections to the Chamber of Representatives of the Belarusian National Assembly," it said.

The parliamentary elections in Belarus are scheduled for September 28. The presidential elections are to take place in 2011.
