Belarus Waiting for Arrival of Osce Election Observers

MINSK. July 31 (Interfax) - The Belarusian Central Elections Commission expects the first OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) election observers to arrive on August 11- 12.

"The first long-term election observers of the OSCE are due to arrive on August 11-12. Most probably, that would be technical experts. The long-term election observation mission will start working on August 18," Central Elections Commission Chairperson Lidia Yermoshina told Interfax.

She said that 12 CIS election observers were already working in Belarus.

In all, there will be about 700 international election observers in Belarus.

This time Belarus will allow arrested citizens to take part in the elections, Central Elections Commission member Nadezhda Kiselyova said in Minsk on Thursday.

"Citizens held in detention wards and prisons will vote," she said.

Belarus will elect the lower house of the national parliament on September 28.
