McCain On Belarus

On the campaign trail in Sparks, Nevada, John McCain probably wasn't expecting to answer any questions about Belarus:

A Sparks business owner who said she was in danger of going bankrupt because she cannot continue to do business with an important partner in Belarus under recent U.S. trade sanctions, asked McCain how he would keep his foreign policy from hurting American interests.

McCain said he supports U.S. sanctions against what he described as the oppressive rule of President Alexander Lukashenko. "I am deeply sorry for what is happening to you as a result of our efforts," McCain said. "Everything I know about Belarus is Lukashenko is a brutal dictator. I believe America must stand up to dictators."
