A young Liberal Party politician has been arrested on arrival in Belarus where he was to hold discussions with local politicians.

Jens-Kristian Lutken, who was a Liberal Party candidate in the recent EU parliamentary elections, was arrested on arrival in the Belarus capital Minsk with four other Danes.

"The police gave no reason for arresting me. The four others were allowed to pass," Lutken explained in a cellphone interview from Minsk.

Lutken is chairman of the cross-party youth organisation Silba, which was set up by the current Danish Education Minister Bertel Haarder in 1994, and whose aim is to further democracy in former Soviet republics.

Lutken also attempted entry to Belarus in 2006 as a voluntary election observer, but was immediately sent out of the country again on arrival.
