Belarus delays introduction of ruble

MINSK, Belarus (UPI) -- Belarus has again delayed introduction of the Russian ruble, which had been scheduled to begin circulating at the beginning of next year.

Minsk officials cited "technical reasons" for delaying the ruble`s introduction into their country, MosNews said Tuesday.

Originally, it was planned that the Russian ruble would become the single currency of Russia and Belarus on Jan. 1, 2005. But in March 2004 it was announced by Russia`s Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin that the introduction of the ruble would be postponed.

The unified currency is related to discussions about a union between Russia and Belarus first pushed by former Russian President Boris Yeltsin.
