President Kwasniewski: Polish-Russian relations difficult

Poland's president Aleksander Kwasniewski has described Polish-Russian relations as difficult but he believes that an improvement is possible. He added that there were many reasons for that, one of which is the recent beating of Polish diplomats and citizens in Moscow. The worsening began after the Soviet bloc collapsed and its member states gained independence and switched to democracy. "These countries walked out of the Warsaw Pact and entered NATO. Many Russians still perceive the North Atlantic Treaty as a hostile organization and Poland is its member" - President Kwasniewski said.

Polasnd has to show patience in relations with its eastern neighbours, the president said referring also to tensions on the Warsaw-Minsk line. He admitted that Poland is looking forward to a reaction of the EU on Belarus.
