Belarus orders Russian missile defense

Belarus is to order the very advanced S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler) air defense system from Russia, which would be delivered by 2010.

The S-400 Triumf is the newest air defense missile system developed by Almaz Central Design Bureau, which has twice the range of its American rival the MIM 104-Patriot system.

"Belarus submitted a formal request for two S-400 battalions to be made available by 2010," a source in the Russian military said.

"A decision to export such systems may only be made by the country's top leadership," an expert said, commenting on a recent statement by Belarus about its intention to buy S-400 systems.

Almaz General Director Igor Ashurbeili stated that the export of S-400s might start as early as 2009.

The system is believed to have such a high capability that it can destroy stealth aircrafts and cruise and ballistic missiles with an effective range of up to 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles), and a speed of up to 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) per second.
