Galway Charity In Limbo Over Axing Of Belarus Flights

A Galway charity which brings children here from Belarus is in limbo after Belavia airline announced it's axing its winter service to Shannon.

The Belarusian Airline finally made the announcement after days of speculation that it was reviewing its operations here.

Although it will only cease flights during the winter months, the airline says it won't make a decision on the summer services until January.

But it's thought that rising operating costs will mean the Minsk Shannon service will be axed completely, leaving no direct flights from Belarus to Ireland.

The decision means that Galway Sunflower Chernobyl Appeal which brings around 100 children to Galway every year is in limbo.

With no direct flights into Ireland during the winter, it will mean hardship for sick children coming to Galway for medical treatment.
