Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Welcomes Release of Belarusian Oppositionist Kozulin from Penal Colony

Ukraine, Kiev, 19 August / TrendNews, corr Z. Novosvitski/ The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine welcomes the release of Belarusian oppositionist Aleksandr Kozulin from a penal colony, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

"We see this move as an indication of preparedness of Belarus government to restore constructive dialogue with the international community and to get actively involved in the all-European processes," the Ministry said.

In March 2006, Kozulin ran for presidency in Belarus and in July he was charged with hooliganism and sentenced to five years and six months of jail in the penal colony. Kozulin was released from the colony o 16 August.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is hopeful that Belarus will continue to take measures to improve situation in the sphere of human rights and freedom of media and secure conduct of free parliament elections.
