Lukashenko withdraws visas for Chernobyl children

Thousands of children from the area surrounding Chernobyl will probably not be able to go on holiday to other European countries this year as Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has withdrawn their visas. Many of the children who are ill are sent on holiday for health reasons. President Lukashenko fears that the children will request asylum once they reach their holiday destinations. The move cane after the US granted asylum to a Belarusian child.

Chernobyl was the site of the world's largest nuclear disaster in 1986. Although Chernobyl is in Ukraine, the affects were also felt in neighbouring Belarus.
