Belarus to recognise South Ossetia, Abkhazia

Belarus would be the first country to follow Russia in recognising South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Belarus will soon announce its recognition of the independence of Georgia's South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions, Russian news agencies cited Minsk's ambassador to Russia as saying on Thursday.

"As far as support is concerned, we are allies, and that says it all," Belarussian Ambassador Vasily Dolgolev told journalists when asked whether Minsk would support the independence of the two regions.

"We cannot support the aggression which was unleashed by Georgia. I think what Russia did was correct," agencies cited him as saying.

He said President Alexander Lukashenko may announce the decision on Thursday or Friday.

Earlier, Lukashenko said Russia had had no choice but to recognise the independence of the two regions.
