Do or do not, there is no try; Yota to deploy mobile WiMAX network in Belarus

Russia-based mobile WiMAX network developer Yota has announced plans to launch operations in Belarus, local press service BelTA reports. According to the news agency the Belarus State Commission on Radio Frequencies issued Yota Bel Company with a licence to use spectrum within the 2.5GHz-2.6GHz frequency band in December 2008. Yota Bel is part of WiMAX Holding, which is the owner of Russian operator Scartel (operating under the Yota brand). Yota has already received its 2.5GHz-2.6GHz frequencies covering Grodno and intends to roll out a pilot network 'within months', with commercial services expected to begin in H2 2010. In some regions however, the radio frequencies Yota Bel intends to use are currently set aside for analogue TV broadcasts, but once the signal switches over to digital, Yota will receive the go ahead in these areas too. The WiMAX start-up also plans to launch a high speed WiMAX network in Minsk and within two and a half years says it will have deployed services in all the oblast centres of Belarus. Yota intends to use the WiMAX equipment (standard IEEE 802.16e-2005) produced by Samsung.
