Belarus kids have fun at the Ice Bowl

The Belfast group of the Chernobyl Children's Appeal stopped at Dundonald International Ice Bowl last week, accompanied by a group of children from Belarus.

Welcomed by the Mayor of Castlereagh, Councillor Lawrence Walker, the group soon got to grips with the facility, enjoying the magic of Indiana Land, the ultra violet lights of the Xtreme Bowling Centre and the thrills and spills of the ice rink.

The children, aged between seven and 13, are visiting Northern Ireland as part of the Summer Rest and Recuperation Programme, a scheme allowing them a three-week respite from the environmental conditions they face at home.

Belarus received 70 percent of the radioactive fallout after the explosion of reactor four at the Chernobyl nuclear plant on April 26, 1986.

Councillor Walker said: "I am delighted to welcome the children from Belarus to Castlereagh.

"I would like to thank the Belfast group of the Chernobyl Children's Appeal for organising the trip and I hope the children enjoy their day out in Castlereagh."

Tanya Senkova, the group's translator, said: "The children have had a great time in Northern Ireland and really will be sad to go home."

During their visit, the group are staying with families from Belfast, Castlereagh and Cloughy.
