Six Belarusian training grounds to be engaged in West 2009 drill

MOSCOW. Aug 31 (Interfax-AVN) - More than 10,000 Russian and Belarusian servicemen and hundreds of units of military hardware will take part in the West 2009 operative and strategic exercises due on September 18-29, a military diplomat told Interfax-AVN in Moscow on Monday.

"About 12,500 servicemen, including 1,800 reservists, will take part in the West 2009 drill on the Belarusian territory. More than 220 tanks, about 470 infantry combat vehicles, 230 self-propelled and towed artillery weapons, mortars and volley fire systems, about 60 planes and 40 helicopters will be engaged in the war game. Up to 600 paratroopers and nine pieces of military hardware will be airdropped," he said.

The exercises will be held at the Obuz-Lesnovsky, Borisov, Domansky, Ruzhino, Brest and Neman training grounds of the Belarusian armed forces.

West 2009, the second phase of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) exercises, will take place in Belarus to practice the operation of the Belarus-Russia regional force.

The drill's first phase took place in Moscow on August 26-28 to prepare for the operation of the Collective Operational Reaction Force and military contingents of CSTO member countries.

The third phase will be held in Kazakhstan on October 2-15. That is when the new forces will practice for the first time. The exercises will engage military units, security services, law enforcers and rescuers. CSTO chiefs of state are expected to watch the exercises.
