Belarus youngsters enjoy sea air

YOUNGSTERS from Belarus enjoyed the sea air on a visit to Filey as guests of the local Rotary Club.

Organiser Nigel Wales, who has taken part in a number of relief trips for the Chernobyl Children's Project, said they thoroughly enjoyed their day, in spite of the poor weather which forced the cancellation of the Lions donkey derby.

He said: "We borrowed a parachute from the scout group and had a laugh with that on the beach.

"And the Lions club gave them some spending money that they would normally use at the donkey derby, so they indulged themselves with ice-creams and rock and so on.

"We also went to the Glen Gardens cafe, where they got a discounted meal and the staff really did us proud."

During the day, the 10 children, who were accompanied by an interpreter, met the mayor, Cllr Sam Cross and Rotarians and their partners.

Mr Wales said: "There was a little girl who had lost both her parents about three months ago, and it just goes to show that they're still having problems as a result of the nuclear disaster."

He said it was a shame there were fewer children than usual due to visa delays.

The youngsters were staying with host families in the West Riding.
