Russia, Belarus coordinate initial draft of NPP agreement

MOSCOW. Aug 10 (Interfax) - Russia and Belarus have coordinated the initial text of the intergovernmental agreement on the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

The Belarusian Energy Ministry organized a conference to that effect last week, the press office of the general contractor Atomstroyexport said.

Now the document will be presented to Russian and Belarusian ministries.

Also, the sides signed an action plan for this year. A feasibility study of prospective investments in the Belarusian NPP will be discussed soon at the St. Petersburg headquarters of Atomenergoproyekt, the general designer of the project.

The Russian participation in the construction of the first Belarusian nuclear power plant was affirmed in a protocol the Rosatom delegation signed in Belarus in January 2009. Atomstroyexport was declared the general contractor. French-German Areva and American- Japanese Westinghouse-Toshiba were the Russian rivals.

It is planned to build two energy units, each with the capacity of 1,200 megawatts, in the Grodno region on the basis of the NPP 2006 project of Atomstroyproyekt. The first unit will be ready in 2016, and the second on in 2018.

Russia and Belarus still need to coordinate financial terms of the project. Belarus asked Russia in June to consider a possible loan of $9 billion for the NPP project and related infrastructure. No decision has yet been made.
