No swine flu cases reported in Belarus - Health Ministry

MINSK. Aug 14 (Interfax) - No A (H1N1) swine flu cases have been registered in Belarus, Inna Karaban, chief epidemiologist of the country's Health Ministry, told Interfax on Friday.

"No A (H1N1) swine flu cases confirmed by laboratory tests have been registered in Belarus," Karaban said, commenting on media reports that Russian medical officials have called into question the absence of cases of this disease in Belarus.

"There were three suspicious cases, but the results of laboratory tests did not confirm the A (H1N1) flu virus," she said.

The Belarusian authorities continue screening passengers arriving on flights from countries plagued by swine flu outbreaks, she added.

"More than 173,000 passengers and crewmembers on 2,170 flights were screened between April 27, 2009, when this measure [screening] was introduced, and August 12, 2009," Karaban said.

The chief epidemiologist, however, said she does not rule out that "people infected with swine flu could be registered in Belarus in the future."

"People continue to return from their vacations. I do not rule out that the first cases of this disease could appear in Belarus by the end of the holiday season," she said.
