Written by Nathan Greenhalgh

VILNIUS - A high-ranking Lithuanian policeman was arrested on Tuesday in Belarus on suspicion of drug trafficking, but little other information is being released.

The Lithuanian embassy in Belarus confirmed that Laimonas Bankauskas, head of the Vilnius Police Department's equestrian police division, was arrested but provided no further details. Belarusian authorities said the arrest had to do with narcotic trafficking but provided no further information.

The Vilnius police department declined to comment on the case.

The same day, a 34-year-old man from Kaunas was arrested in Lithuania near the Belarusian border in possession of 100 kg of hashish, with an estimated street value of 2 million litai (?580,000).

Bankauskas has worked as head of the equestrian police division for five years. He is currently being held in the Belarusian border town of Ashmyany, 50 km southeast from the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius.
