Belarus eyes Latvia as new route for Venezuelan crude oil

Lithuania, Latvia's southern neighbor, is due later this week to receive a tanker shipment of almost 550,000 barrels of Venezuelan crude oil bound for Belarus.

Belarus, a landlocked country, is negotiating with Latvia to become its gateway to import oil from Venezuela, Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov said on Monday.

The initiative highlights Belarus' intentions to reduce its reliance on neighboring Russia.

After meeting with his Latvian counterpart Aivis Ronis during a visit to Riga, Martynov said his country was "seriously interested" in creating a new strategic transit route through the Baltic countries (Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania).

"Whether it will turn out or not, only time will tell," he said.
