Belarus interested in mining mineral resources in Gambia

Belarus is interested in mining mineral resources in Gambia, said Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov after signing a memorandum of understanding between the Belarusian Foreign Ministry and Gambia's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad on 26 August, Belarus media have reported.

"As there are few mineral resources in Belarus, we are interested in everything the industry needs. We are particularly interested in the latest oil extraction surveys in Gambia," said Sergei Martynov.

In his words, the Belarusian side is also interested in developing the industry, agriculture, technical and educational potential of Gambia. The head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry underlined that cooperation should be mutually beneficial. In particular, Belarus is ready to step up trade, export and import. Belarus is also ready to consider projects for setting up assembly enterprises, sharing new technologies, training specialists, said Sergei Martynov.

In turn, Gambia's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Dr. Mamadou Tangara said that the Gambia is particularly interested in cooperation in agriculture. "We expect Belarus' aid in mechanizing agriculture. Gambia has very fertile lands. At present we do not produce enough agricultural products to satisfy the domestic demand, but we would like to reach the output that will be sufficient for export in the future," he said. Gambia is particularly interested in buying Belarusian tractors as well as the opportunity of learning Belarus' experience of mastering new technologies. Dr. Tangara also pointed out good relations between the two countries. In his opinion, Belarus and Gambia have a lot in common.

According to Sergei Martynov, Belarus and Gambia are just starting developing their relations. During the visit of the head of the Gambian Foreign Ministry, the sides tried to determine the mutually beneficial areas that could be most productive in the future. Several key agreements have been prepared to create the foundation for future cooperation between Belarus and Gambia. The draft agreements have been forwarded to the Gambian side for examination.
