Decisive steps to nuclear disarmament is condition for recognition from international community- Belarus MFA

Belarus speaks in favour of creating such an international environment where decisive steps of the states towards nuclear disarmament would be a compulsory condition for recognition and respect from the international community, Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov said is his written address to the participants of a ministerial session on supporting the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTB Treaty). The session took place in the UN headquarters in New York, BelTA learnt from the Belarusian Permanent Office in the UN.

As the first country in the world that voluntary refused to possess any nuclear weapons and as a country that one of the first signed the CTB Treaty, Belarus has a full moral right to raise the level of its expectations so high, the Head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry reasons.

Although for the 12 years from the moment of the CTB Treaty drawing up, a large number of states has signed and ratified it, an impressive verifying infrastructure has been developed and a valuable scientific and technological experience has been gained. All the aforementioned can not justify the situation when the main political goal of the Treaty remains unfulfilled, underscored Sergei Martynov. The states hampering the treaty prompt entry into force should be responsible for a dangerous erosion of the fundamental principles of the nuclear weapon non-proliferation regime.

The Foreign Minister of Belarus expressed confidence that the treaty entry into force would considerably enhance the level of trust and predictability in the relations between the countries and would become an additional guarantee for the states that do not possess nuclear weapon against nuclear weapon use. Belarus as the country that suffered from the Chernobyl catastrophe in the worst degree believes in inadmissibility of using or threatening to use the nuclear weapon in order to solve any kinds of international discrepancies, said Sergei Martynov.
