Belarus goes to the polls

Voters in Belarus are voting in a parliamentary election. They are being asked to choose 110 members for the lower house of parliament, which currently has no members from the opposition. The opposition has already criticised the poll as undemocratic, fearing widespread voting fraud by allies of Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko. Lukaschenko, who has been in power for 14 years, has often been accused of human rights abuses by the West. The vote is to be monitored by almost 400 observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. The OSCE said last week that the election was being run more freely than in previous years. The first results are expected on Monday.
