Belarussians vote in parliamentary polls

MINSK, Belarus, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Voters in Belarus went to the polls Sunday to participate in parliamentary elections that opposition candidates contend are undemocratic, officials said.

Up for grabs are 110 seats in the country's lower house of parliament, which until now has had no members opposing Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko, Deutsche Welle reported.

That has led opposition parties to claim Lukashenko, who has been in power for 14 years, intends to perpetrate widespread vote rigging and fraud. The vote is being monitored by hundreds of observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the German broadcaster said.

The European group said last week the Belarussian elections appeared to be freer than previous polls.
