Over 400 Osce Observers to Monitor Vote Count in Belarus

MINSK. Sept 28 (Interfax-West) - Over 400 representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will monitor the vote count in the Belarusian parliamentary polls after the polling stations close, Janez Lenarcic, director of the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights said in Minsk.

OSCE observers will monitor the vote count and draw up final protocols, Lenarcic told the press on Sunday. Monitoring must cover all phases of the election process, he said.

There was no possibility to monitor the vote count in the past, so this time observers will hopefully manage to work efficiently, he said. Observers must see how the vote count is proceeding, he said.

The Belarusian election is being monitored by over 300 observers from the ODIHR and more than 100 observers of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, he said adding that they plan to visit several thousand polling stations.

Lenarcic said that a final report would be released in two months. A report to be made on the next day following the election would be tentative, he said.

The ODIHR does not comment on the outcome of the election, but assesses whether voters had a choice, he said.
