Netherlands: FM Verhagen summons Belarusian ambassador

Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen summoned the Belarusian ambassador yesterday because Belarus is refusing to give a group of children from the Chernobyl area permission to travel to the Netherlands.

A Dutch charity devoted to the children of Chernobyl had arranged for them to have a holiday in the Netherlands.

`I believe that the children's interests should come first,' Mr Verhagen said. `They are looking forward to this holiday. It would be a tremendous disappointment for them and the organisations involved if the trip was cancelled.'

At the meeting, the ambassador was urged to grant the children and the accompanying adults permission to make the journey. It was also made clear to him that private initiatives like this have the wholehearted support of both the Dutch government and the Dutch public.
