EU ready to meet Belarusian foreign minister

AVIGNON, France, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- European Union (EU) foreign ministers agreed on Saturday to invite Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov for talks at their formal meeting scheduled for Sept. 15, said French Foreign Minister Kouchner.

"We decided to see him. But we didn't say when," said Kouchner when asked whether Martynov might be invited to a formal EU foreign ministers' meeting on Sept. 15 in Brussels.

The EU imposed visa bans on Belarusian officials for what it claimed the authoritarian rule of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

The EU showed willingness to improve ties with Belarus after opposition figures were released from detention last month.

The EU move also came as the bloc looks to closer ties with its Eastern neighbors to counter Russia's assertiveness following last month's military conflict between Russia and Georgia. ?
