Obama's decision to shelve missile plan - courageous - Lukashenko

MINSK, September 19 (Itar-Tass) - Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko has welcomed as positive U.S. President Barack Obama's scrapping plans to deploy key elements of a US missile defence shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.

At the same time he urged restraint in this issue. "There is no need to make haste with applauding. Let's see what further steps the United States and its allies in the North-Atlantic Alliance will take," he told reporters on Saturday.

"The U.S.' position is that it will not deploy its missile defence components, but it is ready to deploy new and modern sea-based interceptors in North and South Europe," he said.

Along with this Lukashenko described Obama's decision as a courageous move.

"This is a courageous move and if the U.S. does not commit follies, this would be very good," he said.
