Yushchenko: Ukraine ready to begin supplying electricity to Lithuania through Belarus

President Viktor Yushchenko has announced that Ukraine is ready to begin supplying electricity to Lithuania through Belarus.

The press service of Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaite announced this after Grybauskaite met with Yushchenko in New York.

"The Ukrainian leader assured that Ukraine would be able to cover our country's electricity shortage through Belarus after closure of the Ignalina nuclear power station," the press service said.

According to the press service, Yushchenko added that Ukraine was ready to sign concrete agreements on the volume of electricity supplies.

Yushchenko and Grybauskaite also discussed Ukraine's customs policy and its intention to integrate into the Euro-Atlantic community.

Grybauskaite stressed that one of the most important tasks of Ukraine during this process was to secure the approval of its people.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine is considering the possibility of creating a company in Lithuania for exporting electricity through Belarus to Lithuania as well as to other Baltic States.

Creation of a separate company for this purpose in Lithuania is being considered because of the difficulties involved in transporting electricity on transit through Belarus.
