Belarusian police break up opposition rally

Associated Press

Police in the capital of Belarus have broken up a rally of opposition activists protesting joint military maneuvers with Russia.

Several dozen demonstrators rallied to oppose the exercise, which they saw as part of Russian plans to annex Belarus.

Police agents dispersed Wednesday's rally, tearing placards saying "Russian army go home!" and beating several demonstrators before busing them away. About 20 protesters were detained.

About 6,000 Russian troops and a similar number of Belarusian soldiers are scheduled to take part in the exercises this month. The first Russian soldiers arrived in Belarus on Wednesday.

The two ex-Soviet neighbors have close political and military ties, but relations deteriorated recently amid a series of economic disputes.
