Belarusian Activist Fined For Distributing Independent Newspapers

A Belarusian activist in the central city of Salihorsk has been fined around $400 by a court for distributing independent newspapers, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Andrey Tychyna was detained by police in Salihorsk's central market on August 31 while distributing newspapers with the logo of the opposition Tell the Truth campaign.

Local businesswoman Tatsyana Kuchynskaya was also detained with Tychyna on that day. She was distributing booklets with the text of a presidential decree on property rents, as well as copies of "The Market And Us" newspaper, which also includes the Tell the Truth logo.

Her trial is scheduled for September 23.

The Tell the Truth campaign is organized by the Moving Forward movement, which is led by writer and civic activist Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu, a former chairman of the Union of Belarusian Writers. It encourages Belarusians to speak out about social problems.

The offices of the Tell the Truth campaign and homes of several members were raided by police in May.
