19 candidates to run for president in Belarus

MINSK, September 24 (Itar-Tass) -- There will be 19 candidates in the Belarusian presidential election of December 19, 2010. All of them have applied to the Central Elections Commission for registering groups of citizens that nominate them for president.

When the groups are registered, they will start collecting signatures in candidates' support from September 30. No less than 100,000 signatures must be collected per candidate.

"The Central Elections Commission has stopped receiving applications for registration of initiative groups. A decision on their registration is due on September 27," a Central Elections Commission source told Itar-Tass.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko applied to the Central Elections Commission for registering his initiative group on Friday.

The group led by Education Minister Alexander Radkov has 8,403 members.

Lukashenko said earlier there was no reason for abstaining from the fourth presidential election campaign.

Other candidates include European Belarus leader Andrei Sannikov, Tell the Truth leader Vladimir Neklyayev, Belarusian Popular Front head Grigory Kostusev, Belarusian Social-Democratic Party Chairman Nikolai Statkevich, deputy head of the United Civil Party Yaroslav Romanchuk, Chairman of the Union for Modernization Organizing Committee Ales Mikhalevich and Belarusian Christian Democracy Cochairman Vitaly Rimashevksy.
