Belarus - Commentary to Decree No 490 of 27 September 2010

On the 27th of September President Alexander Lukashenko signed into effect Decree No 490 'On Establishing the Amounts of the Minimum Salary for the Period of November-December of the Year 2010'.

According to the Decree, the minimum salary in Belarus has been set in the amount of Br400,000, the minimum per-hour salary in the amount of Br2,360.

As a result of the move, the minimal salary has been raised by 54.7 per cent, and the per-hour salary by 54.2 per cent. The purpose of this move is to improve the social security of the low-paid categories of employees across the economy, regardless of the form of business ownership, either state-owned or private; also, it is done to prevent the reduction in the ratio between the minimum salary and the minimum subsistence budget, as well as to bring the level of salaries to the level of the minimum consumer budget.
