Belarus to build hydropower and wind farms by 2015

Two hydropower plants with a total capacity of 63MW are expected to come up on the Western Dvina and Vitebsk. Two more plants, having a total capacity of 37MW, will be built on the Neman River. Additionally, ten existing hydropower plants will be restored, and 35 new ones constructed. The plants are expected to produce up to 600 million kWh of electricity. The country has identified 1,840 potential wind sites, which have a total capacity of 1,600MW. Plans are afoot to build a 160MW wind farm in Dzerzhinsk district, Minsk Oblast between 2011 and 2014. In 2009, the country had a total installed capacity of 1.2MW.
