Heartening Belarus's democrats

Belarus, run by a jurassic communist dictator, is the most horrible tyranny in Europe. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has specially noted the vileness of this brutal Marxist dictatorship, where human rights are utterly absent, and encouraged the opposition. But in this gray, Stalinist state, so unlike the rest of New Europe, there is virtually nothing to be hopeful about and opponents to the regime are treated harshly. Even the right to demonstrate is so constricted that Belarusians have few prospects for a Velvet or Orange or Rose or Daffodil revolution, as happened in the other states and satellites of the old Soviet empire.

But something dramatic and unique is happening as a response to the intolerable conditions of the Belarus dictatorship. The Belarus dictator likes to yell a lot about how there won't be any Ukraine-style 'Orange Revolution' and he uses his muscle to make sure. But people outside Belarus, friends and neighbors whose hearts have been ignited by the great Ukrainian uprising for democracy, have decided to march in proxy to the deeply repressed Belarussian people who cannot do this on their own.

All around the world today, a great march for democracy in Belarus is happening. Robert Mayer, the marvelous innovative founder of Publius Pundit, the blog about world democracy revolutions, has taken a lead in the U.S. side of this collective effort, and working with other democracy activists around the world, has organized a big march for Belarus democracy in Boston. If you are there, try to go to this event. Or any of the others here, or here.

Go see the particulars Robert has written up about this important event to support democracy from the outside here and here.
