Peace stone from Hiroshima presented to Belarus

MINSK - A Hiroshima-based civic group presented Belarus on Friday with one of the streetcar paving stones damaged in the 1945 U.S. atomic bombing of the Japanese city in a ceremony marked by memories of the tragedy and the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster that seriously affected much of the former Soviet republic.

"Sixty-two years ago, on Aug 6, 1945, the world's first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, and took away more than 100,000 people's precious lives," the head of the Stone for Peace Association of Hiroshima said at the ceremony in the Belarusian capital. The stone, engraved with an image of a Buddhist goddess of mercy, "was one of the stones that were there on that day, 200 meters from the very center of the explosion," association leader Michio Umemoto said.
