Russia, Belarus to Set Up Joint Regional Air Defense System - Borodin

MOSCOW. Oct 8 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and Belarus will sign an agreement in early November on setting up a joint regional air defense system, Union of Belarus and Russia State Secretary Pavel Borodin told journalists on Wednesday.

"The Supreme State Council of the Union will hold a session in Moscow on November 2. Military-technological cooperation will be the key issue on its agenda," Borodin said before the opening of a session of the board of the Russian and Belarusian Defense Ministries.

The two countries plan to sign an agreement on setting up a joint regional air defense system in Moscow on November 2, Borodin said. "I do not have any doubt about this," he said.

The signing of such an agreement is especially important against the background of the ongoing NATO enlargement eastward, Borodin said. "In military terms, this is in fact a defense against NATO," Borodin said.

In addition, the expansion of military-technological cooperation between Russia and Belarus will facilitate the creation of new jobs on the two countries' defense enterprises, he said.
